Being in Tikal at dawn is a magical experience, not only to see the sunrise that is only seen 2 times out of 10 due to the fog, but to hear the sounds of the daytime fauna when it wakes up, we wait for sunrise at the door of the Temple number IV whose official name is Temple of the Double Headed Serpent, also known as Temple of the Star Wars since from that place was filmed part of the first movie of that series. We recommend to go prepared with your own breakfast to enjoy a picnic in that mystical place while some species of fauna are appearing.

Tikal is World Heritage both Cultural and Natural, after the picnic we will have a walk without crowds enjoying some monuments and especially the fauna and the pleasant temperature of the jungle. Our walk lasts until 10:30 in the morning, which gives us enough time to explore part of Tikal with no rush, if you hire different tours in Tikal with us, in each tour we take you to different monuments, Tikal is so extensive that has enough to show.

The Tikal National Park covers 222 square miles of forest and thousands of structures in ruins, recently with LIDAR technology have been documented 10 thousand structures.

Tikal grew into an important ceremonial, cultural, and commercial centre over the centuries. Most of the city’s huge temples were constructed during the eighth century AD when Tikal became the greatest city in the Maya world with a population of perhaps 120,000.

The Museum of the University of Pennsylvania, the Guatemalan Institute of Anthropology and History restored Tikal’s structures during the 1950s and 1960s. More recently the cooperation of Spain has donated resources to restore some other structures. Today Tikal is to Guatemala what the Great Pyramids are to Egypt, a national symbol and a source of pride in the past.

The Temple of the Grand Jaguar (Temple I) and the Temple of the Masks (Temple II) loom like a pair of colossal bookends of opposite sides of the Great Plaza, a vast expanse ringed by terraces, palaces and ball courts.

Temple I rises some 150 feet above the plaza’s eastern end. A stone stairway leads up the pyramids’s nine tiers, corresponding to the nine levels of the Mayan underworld.
